Cocktail Hour: The Presser Foot

Hi there!  This month’s beverage is basically a variation on a Mojito, but we’ve added some cucumber simple syrup.
It’s called the Presser Foot because of the muddling!

Ingredients:

Good white rum
Cucumber infused simple syrup
Fresh mint
Limes
Persian cucumbers
Club Soda
sugar

Make the simple syrup:  we bought basic simple syrup like this:

simplesyrup

Bring 1 cup of it to a boil on the stove and then add one peeled and chopped persian cucumber.  Strain out the cucumber. Let it cool and then chill in the fridge.

Put about 10 mint leaves and 1 or 2 slices of lime in the bottom of each glass and muddle them up.

Pour in 2 ounces of rum

DSC_5883DSC_5884

and one ounce of infused simple syrupDSC_5888

Add ice and fill with club soda

DSC_5896

Stir in about a 1/2 tablespoon of sugar

Garnish with a cucumber round and have a party in your camper! (or anywhere!)

Cocktail Hour: The French Seam

Mmmmm. This is one of our favorites. (did I say that last month?)
We first tried them at my birthday party in February and they were a big hit.
Lisa even said she woke up the next day craving another one…now that’s a well crafted beverage!

I always thought I didn’t like gin,  but maybe I just didn’t like tonic because I LOVE it in this drink.

ingredients:

gin
fresh lemon juice
maraschino liqueur
Creme de Violette
bing cherries
cherry juice
lemon twist

DSC_5748

recipe:

(tip: keep all the ingredients refrigerated so you don’t need to water it down with ice at all!)

In each class put:

one cherry (these no dye Bada Bing cherries are amazing!)

DSC_5750

2 ounces gin (we  love this organic Death’s Door gin)

DSC_5749

1/2 ounce of fresh lemon juice

DSC_5774

1/4 ounce of maraschino liqueur

DSC_5773

and 1/4 ounce of Creme de Violette

DSC_5753

Now add a splash of the juice from the cherries…
DSC_5754

rub that lemon twist along the rim of the glass…

DSC_5779

and voila!

DSC_5758

It is pretty, n’est ce pas?

A votre sante!

We’ll be serving these up at the shop on Saturday April 5th, from 4-6pm.
Come try one!

Cocktail Hour: The Featherweight!

Need something a little cool and refreshing?  Try this delicious variation on a Moscow Mule!

Ingredients:

vodka
lime juice
ginger beer
simple syrup
mint leaves
blackberries
lime wedges for garnish

DSC_5623
Place 4 blackberries and 4-5 mint leaves in the bottom of the glasses.

DSC_5628

Pour in a smidge, maybe 1/4 ounce, of Simple Syrup.

DSC_5632
Muddle up those ingredients.

DSC_5639

DSC_5641

Pour in 1.5 ounces of vodka.  We tried this Square One organic vodka this time- delicious!

DSC_5644
Next pour in 1 ounce of freshly squeezed lime juice.

DSC_5645

Add in 2 ounces of ginger beer and fill the rest of the way with ice.

DSC_5646

Garnish with a lime wedge and voila!
Try these variations, too:
substitute strawberries and basil for the blackberries and mint
or
for an alcohol free version, substitute sparkling water for the vodka- the kids loved this!

DSC_5647

Be careful though, it tastes light and refreshing…

DSC_5652
But it still packs a punch!

Cocktail Hour: The Haberdasher!

We are starting a new monthly tradition here at Sew Modern.
We are going to post a cocktail recipe that we’ve created on the last Wednesday of the month.
If you are in Los Angeles, come to the shop
the Saturday following that post from 4-6pm and try out
that month’s beverage!  Yay!

So without further ado…

The Haberdasher!

This drink was created for the Los Angeles Modern Quilt Guild retreat this past November.

 The ingredients:

Pimm’s No. 1Champagne
Grand Marnier
Fresh orange slices (or Cutie sections)

DSC_5547

Step 1:  Place a slice of orange or cutie section in the bottom of a champagne flute.
We like to give it a little squeeze to let the juice out.

DSC_5548

Step 2:  Fill a champagne glass 1/3 of the way (approx. 2 shots) with Pimm’s.

DSC_5552

Step 3:  Fill the glass almost all the way with champagne.

DSC_5555

Step 4:   Top off with a generous splash of Grand Marnier.

DSC_5557

Step 5:  Share with your besties!
